Richard Roberts is currently serving as concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Prior to his Montreal appointment, he was for eight years assistant concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra under conductor Lorin Maazel. Mr. Roberts received his early violin tutelage with the distinguished teacher Norman Carol, and at the age of seventeen, made his debut as soloist with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole with Stanislow Skrowaczewski conducting. He then pursued studies at Indiana University where he studied violin with Josef Gingold, and chamber music with Janos Starker and William Primrose. He has appeared in solo and chamber music recitals in Canada, South America, Australia, the United States, and Europe, as well as performances with the orchestras of Minnesota, Toronto, Detroit, Cleveland, Montreal, and many others. He has performed the entire cycle of Bach’s Sonata and Partitas for violin alone at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and was a frequent lecturer in the Cleveland Orchestra pre-concert lecture series. As a teacher, Richard Roberts has served on the faculties of the University of Minnesota, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Conservatoire de Musique du Quebec.

Violinist and pianist Dr. Judy Hung is one of very few musicians who play both instruments equally well at a professional level; she leads a versatile musical career as pianist, violinist, violist, music director and professor of music. She is the winner of the Taiwan Violin Competition, Kaohsiung Violin Competition, Syracuse University Piano Concerto Competition and Sewanee Festival Chamber Music Competition. She is the music director and organist at Valois United Church. She is a violist with Orchestre de Chambre de Montréal, and has performed regularly as baroque violinist and violist with Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal, Les Idées heureuses, and Ensemble Caprice. She teaches at McGill Conservatory of Music, Lindsay Place High School, as well as at her studios in Pointe-Claire and Vaudreuil-Dorion. She has given masterclasses and lecture recitals at Dong-Hua University, Wu-Ling High School, Syracuse University, LSU and over 20 middle and high schools in Taiwan. She has performed solo and chamber music in various festivals and concerts in Asia, North America and Europe, including Chautauqua Music Festival, Round Top Festival, Early Music Vancouver, Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute, Heber Spring Chamber Music Festival, and Moscow Conservatory Summer Festival. She has worked as orchestral violinist with Kaohsiung City Symphony, Baton Rouge Symphony, Rapides Symphony, Binghamton Symphony, and has worked as the principal pianist with Lafayette Symphony Orchestra and LSU Wind Ensemble. Judy Hung holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Violin Performance with Orchestral Conducting minor from Louisiana State University, where she studied with Kevork Mardirossian (violin), Jerzy Kosmala (viola) and Michael Gurt (piano) on a full scholarship. She has also completed Master’s degrees in Violin, Piano and Early Music Performance respectively from San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Syracuse University and McGill University.

Cadence

Friday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Adults $23.00 + HST

Students 18+ – $10.00 + HST

4 Performance Subscription – $102.00 + HST

4 Performance Early Bird Subscription – $96.00 + HST

Students Under 18 – Free Admission

The performance will be held at:
The St. Johns United Church, 32 Park St. Brockville

The stage lights fall, the crowd goes quiet, and four harmonious voices rise up and fill the air. The melodies unfurl into something both familiar and fresh. What comes next may be a classic song by Joni Mitchell or Louis Prima.  It may be an old bebop standard or cheeky arrangement of a 1980s hit. But these are arrangements like you’ve never heard them before—containing all the richness of a full band, but performed using just four voices.

This is Cadence, Canada’s premiere vocal group. Based in Toronto, this a cappella ensemble has been wowing audiences across the country and around the world for nearly 20 years. Whether performing at sold-out jazz clubs and concert halls, at music festivals, for educational outreach, or for corporate functions, the members of Cadence bring an infectious energy and uncanny verve to every song they sing.

The group’s four critically acclaimed studio albums, Cool Yule (2011), Speak Easy (2010), Twenty for One (2005), and Frost Free (2000) have won or been nominated for numerous awards, including three nods from the JUNO Awards and 10 from CARA, the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.

Cadence’s live shows are always a hit. They feature a hypnotic blend of complex harmonies, intricate arrangements, vocal dexterity, and just plain fun. On-stage antics and audience participation are par for the course at any Cadence show, but so too is a mesmerizing display of musical genius. What these boys can do with their voices needs to be heard to be believed.

The band is made up of David Lane (baritone and bass), Ross Lynde (tenor), Lucas Marchand (tenor), and Kurt Sampson (bass and vocal percussion). They each bring many years of training and performance experience to create a rich musical event appropriate for all ages.
